In this section we will take a look at some of the theories and evidence produced by psychologists on a number of relevant topics:
• Attachment to the home and local community.
• Individual factors affecting emotional reactions, decision making, and coping skills when people are compelled to move from their home.
• Collective or social factors that govern the way in which the community as a whole reacts to threats and the possibility of large scale or complete desertion.
• The psychology of power. For example, the psychological mechanisms used by those in positions of power to allow them to take action in their own interests that is harmful to others.
• Migration, including (a) adjustment by people who are attempting to settle in a new community, (b) attitudes towards migrants within the host communities.
